KoolTorch
developed and patented a unique approach to making sense of search results in a
way that conventional user interfaces simply do not. KoolTorch’s taxonomy overlay takes
traditional search engine results and displays them in a useful and intuitive
Graphical User Interface. KoolTorch
makes searching FAST and EASY.
In the KoolTorch
version(s) provided at this website, you will see each search result depicted
independently as a search result icon.
Each result can be immediately viewed or accessed by clicking on it. To keep track of where you visited, after a
search result is accessed, the search result icon automatically becomes dark.
Your screen’s real
estate is spatially optimized to allow for large
numbers of search results to be shown on a single screen. [Figure 1]

Each search result
is provided with immediate information. In the Web Search version, each result's
ranking is clearly displayed, and for your convenience, the top ten results are
shown in white. In e-commerce
applications, other information, such as the price of the item [Figure 2], or
time remaining until the auction for the item [Figure 3], may be shown.

The results are
shown grouped based upon common traits (e.g. Books, Clothing),
providing a useful or big-picture context for meaningful review. In the accompanying versions of KoolTorch,
the groups are also distinguished by color. This organization of results helps
you see your search by topic so you can narrow your focus, or perhaps even discover
unexpected results or relationships between items.
Pointing to a
search result provides an immediate
description/image of that item. [Figure 4].
To keep track of search results you have previewed, each search result
icon becomes outlined in black after
it has been scrolled over. With
KoolTorch, you can scan or preview 100 search results, for example, after a
grand total of only 1 click you made to initiate the search!

If desired, you
can narrow or focus your search by category.
Pointing to a category name will identify more specific sub-categories
for the results in that category. [e.g. SHOPPING, Figure 5]

Clicking on the
category name will then show those results arranged in the more specific sub-categories.

The results can be
similarly “drilled down” to more and more specific sub-categories at every
level in the underlying database. This allows you to navigate your search
results in an ordered and intuitive manner.
At any time, you may go to any depicted search result with
one-click.
When you reach the
final category for any search results, the category name icon will be in color
instead of black. [e.g. Business, Figure
7] Clicking on the category name will
provide you with a list of more matching
search results (beyond the original 50 or 100 you selected) located at that
category in the underlying database.

At any time, if
you wish to see the descriptions of all
search results shown on any screen, click on the 
button appearing near the top of the
screen. The same results will then be
shown, each with its description and image, in a more traditional text
listing. You can still “drill down” by
clicking on category names, and “drill out” to more matching search results at
any final category.
From any “TEXT”
screen you can easily go back to the KoolTorch graphical format by clicking on
the 
button appearing near the top of the page.
Finally, you can
freely move back and forth between any pages using the forward 
and back 
arrows appearing near the top of the
screen.
